The “Augmented Hand Series” (by Golan Levin, Chris Sugrue, and Kyle McDonald) is a real-time interactive software system that presents playful, dreamlike, and uncanny transformations of its visitors’ hands. It consists of a box into which the visitor inserts their hand, and a screen which displays their ‘reimagined’ hand—for example, with an extra finger, or with fingers that move autonomously. Critically, the project’s transformations operate within the logical space of the hand itself, which is to say: the artwork performs “hand-aware” visualizations that alter the deep structure of how the hand appears.

The project was developed at the Frank-Ratchye STUDIO for Creative Inquiry in 2013-2014 through a commission from the Cinekid Festival of children’s media.

Memory of Form and Matter is a sculpture series exploring hybrid digital-physical forms. It combines algorithmically generated structures with digital simulations and animation. The digital fabrications are the static, solid output of a digital system. The simulations on the other hand seem alive with motion, but are ethereal and made of light. The sculptures consider the object as having multiple forms some more easily perceived than others.

In the first work-in-progress exploration, the design of the objects are created through programmed movement using physics simulations. The same basic algorithms are seen in the digital half of the sculpture each a version of the other. The two spaces are physically separate but are united through a looking glass. If viewed from a precise position the two worlds are seen together.

An exploration of the negative spaces and movements between fingers, hands and arms. Reflections through glass creates the illusion of a world floating in air.

Base 8 explores the negative spaces and movements between fingers, hands and arms. A reflection through glass creates the illusion of a world floating in air. As visitors reach into the space, moving structures and abstract geometric forms begin to appear in between their fingers or grow out from their hands and arms.

The title of the work was inspired by several rare languages that developed an octal counting base because their culture counted using the spaces in between fingers rather than the fingers themselves (as in the much more common decimal system).

The work uses a 19th century theater trick (Pepper’s ghost) that was originally employed to create the illusion of phantoms or spirits on the stage with live actors. In this modern adaptation of the technique, the illusion is used to create the sensation of a reactive floating world coming to life directly around the visitors body.

An interactive installation that explores light, space, and generative systems. The interface for the work is an analog system of mirrors that allows the visitor to manipulate the projected image, moving its broken pieces to create new structures, or explore the original form.

Generative forms with organic shapes that suggest skeletal structures are created and animated in the projection. These images are broken apart by the mirrors and appear in the space fragmented. Moving the mirrors can reveal the completed structure, however, if instead, the pieces are reconfigured to create new forms, the next generation is created from this information.

Created in collaboration with Damian Stewart.

Human-generated electromagnetic waves are traveling over, around and through us all the time. Wifi, cellphones, radio, and television broadcast all create electromagnetic fields that are ‘loud’ compared to the natural background, but imperceptible to the human senses. This invisible world is alive with activity that directly reflects our growing relationship to and dependence on, technology.

With specialized devices sensitive to changes in electromagnetic fields, detected changes are converted into electrical signals and a unique landscape of sound and structure is slowly uncovered. Snarling wires pulsate and grow in wild masses, cellular-like forms explode as bit torrents download files, and subtle reeds dance and dangle as cellular phone signals cross the room.

Created in collaboration with Damian Stewart.

A Cable Plays is an audio-visual performance where two performers appear to be engaged in a strange game or ritual. As they take turns pinning bits of yarn across an arcane game board, an augmented video of their play-space reveals a world coming to life between the patterns.

The work was inspired by hidden rules between people, in the underlying mathematics of games, and the patterns and behaviors that can emerge from simple rule sets. In this performed narrative, the two players choices influence the audio and visual components. The piece opens with simple abstract organic shapes that resemble cells or nuclei that evolve into more complex forms and feedback. Rising complexity in both the visuals and audio eventually climaxes to a point where the players have no choice but to destroy their creation and leave their mystical world in ruin.

This interactive installation imagines that the worlds inside our digital devices can move into the physical world. Small bugs made of light crawl out of a computer screen onto the human bodies that make contact with them, often surprising their audience as they try to abandon a virtual existence. The magic of the illusion takes shape as the audience lets them explore their bodies, crawling from one person to the next in a strangely intimate way.

As digital technologies have become embedded in everyday life, the line between the virtual and real is increasingly blurred. Delicate Boundaries playfully explores our expectations and understanding of interfaces and interactivity.
